Dr. Lars Schernikau, born 1972, raised Berlin, Germany and married with four children, studied at New York University and INSEAD in France before gaining his doctoral degree in economics on the coal business at the Technische Universität Berlin.
Lars joined the coal business in 2003 and before worked at The Boston Consulting Group in the US and Germany from 1996-2003. As a co-founder, shareholder and former member of the supervisory board in the German-based, publicly listed, international coal marketing and mining companies HMS Bergbau AG and IchorCoal NV, Lars has founded, worked for, and advised a number of companies in the coal and commodity sector in Europe, Asia and Southern Africa.
Currently, Lars focuses on further developing HMS’ global operations as well as marketing of coal and cementitious products in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Indian subcontinent. Today, next to his operational work in the coal industry, he regularly speaks at major coal and energy conferences and workshops around the world.
He published two books "The Renaissance of Steam Coal" in 2010 and “Why Coal will Continue to Power the World” in 2016, which focus on the role of steam coal for today’s energy market and analyzes global demand and supply. He argues that coal remains the key energy resource for decades to come and bridges the gap between the ages of oil and solar energy. He has the contrarian view that man-made CO2 has no significant influence on the weather or climate and that “carbon mitigation” funds are urgently needed for true environmental problems such as waste and air/water/soil pollution.
